Penalty kick

A direct kick taken from the penalty mark after a defending-team offence punishable by a direct free kick occurs inside its own penalty area. Only the goalkeeper may defend the goal during the kick.

Penalty mark: A marked spot 11 metres from the goal line from which a penalty kick is taken. It fixes the kick's starting point and distance from goal.
Penalty shoot-out: A tie-breaking contest in which teams take alternating kicks from the penalty mark. Penalty kicks become a sequence of attempts when a knockout match remains tied.
William McCrum: An Irish goalkeeper and football administrator who proposed the penalty-kick rule in 1890. His proposal addressed deliberate fouls near the goal.
