Penghu

Penghu is an archipelago in the Taiwan Strait administered by Taiwan as Penghu County. Its islands are known for basalt landscapes, maritime history, and seasonal monsoon winds.

Magong: Magong is Penghu’s largest city and county seat, located on the main island. The county’s political and commercial center anchors the archipelago.
Basalt: Basalt is a dark volcanic rock formed when low-viscosity lava cools at or near the surface. Repeated basalt flows created many of Penghu’s striking sea cliffs and columns.
Wang Dayuan: Wang Dayuan was a fourteenth-century Chinese traveler and author of an account of maritime Asia. His account is among the early written records associated with Penghu.
Zheng Chenggong: Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga, was a seventeenth-century Ming loyalist and military leader. His campaigns brought Penghu into the struggle for control of Taiwan and its approaches.
Penghu National Scenic Area: Penghu National Scenic Area is a protected tourism region covering much of Penghu County. It organizes tourism around the archipelago’s coastlines, islands, and heritage.
Siyu: Siyu, also called Xiyu, is an island in western Penghu County. Its coastal villages and historic lighthouse show the island group beyond Magong.
Columnar jointing: Columnar jointing is the formation of polygonal columns as cooling lava contracts and fractures. This cooling process produced Penghu’s well-known geometric basalt formations.
Ming dynasty: The Ming dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644. Ming maritime policy and coastal conflicts shaped Penghu’s place in regional records.
Chen Kuang-fu: Chen Kuang-fu was a Taiwanese politician who served as the first elected magistrate of Penghu County. His election marked a change in local county governance after Taiwan’s democratization.
Marine protected area: A marine protected area is a defined sea region managed to conserve ecosystems and resources. Protection helps safeguard Penghu’s coral habitats and marine biodiversity.
