Penology

Penology is the study of punishment, prisons, and the prevention and treatment of crime. It examines how societies sanction offenders and seek to reduce offending.

Punishment: The deliberate imposition of a burden or deprivation in response to a rule violation or offense. Penology examines punishment’s purposes, forms, and effects.
Incarceration: The confinement of a person in a prison or other custodial institution. It is the defining deprivation used by prison-based punishment.
Retributive justice: A theory of justice that justifies punishment as a proportionate response to wrongdoing. It grounds punishment in deserved consequences rather than future crime reduction.
Mass incarceration: The extensive use of imprisonment, producing unusually large prison populations within a society. It exposes the population-level consequences of relying heavily on confinement.
Criminal justice: The institutions and processes through which societies enforce criminal law and respond to offenses. Penology focuses on the sanctions and corrections within this wider system.
Probation: A court-ordered period of community supervision, often imposed instead of imprisonment. It shows how punishment can operate outside prison walls.
Restorative justice: An approach to addressing crime that emphasizes repairing harm through participation by affected parties. It shifts attention from penal hardship toward repairing relationships and losses.
Prison overcrowding: A condition in which a prison holds more people than its capacity can safely or adequately accommodate. It shows how custodial policy can undermine prison conditions and services.
Criminology: The study of crime, its causes, and society’s responses to it. Its explanations of offending inform penological prevention and treatment.
Parole: Conditional release from prison under supervision before a sentence has fully expired. It links confinement to supervised return to the community.
