Penrose–Hawking singularity theorems

Results in general relativity proving that specified conditions, such as trapped surfaces or cosmological expansion, imply geodesic incompleteness. They show that classical spacetime cannot always be extended indefinitely, without requiring curvature to become infinite.

Geodesic: A path through spacetime followed by a freely falling particle or light ray. The theorems define incompleteness by showing that certain geodesics end after finite affine or proper time.
Trapped surface: A closed spacelike surface whose future-directed inward and outward light rays both have decreasing cross-sectional area. Penrose’s collapse theorem begins from this geometric signature of strong gravitational collapse.
Roger Penrose: A British mathematical physicist whose work on spacetime geometry and black holes reshaped general relativity. His 1965 theorem established that singularity formation need not rely on spherical symmetry.
Curvature singularity: A spacetime region where curvature invariants or other measures of gravitational tidal strength diverge. Geodesic incompleteness does not by itself prove that curvature diverges.
Black hole: A region of spacetime from which no future-directed causal signal can escape to distant observers. The collapse theorem makes black-hole formation compatible with unavoidable incompleteness under broad conditions.
Geodesic incompleteness: The failure of a spacetime to contain an entire geodesic, even when that path has finite parameter length. This is the theorems’ precise conclusion, rather than the direct claim that a singular point exists.
Gravitational collapse: The contraction of matter under gravity, potentially forming a black hole. Penrose showed that collapse producing a trapped surface forces geodesic incompleteness under suitable assumptions.
Stephen Hawking: A British theoretical physicist who applied global relativity methods to black holes and cosmology. He extended incompleteness arguments to cosmological expansion and collaborated on a more general theorem.
Coordinate singularity: A failure of a coordinate system at a location where the underlying spacetime geometry remains regular. The theorems concern incomplete spacetime paths, not merely a defective choice of coordinates.
Big Bang: The early hot, dense phase from which the observed universe expanded. Cosmological incompleteness results support a boundary to classical descriptions of the universe’s past.
