Pentane

Pentane is a colorless, highly flammable alkane with molecular formula C₅H₁₂. The unqualified name commonly denotes the straight-chain isomer, one of three structural isomers.

Alkanes: Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons containing only carbon–carbon single bonds. Pentane belongs to this hydrocarbon family, whose bonding determines its chemical behavior.
Molecular formula: A molecular formula states the number of atoms of each element in a molecule. C₅H₁₂ gives pentane’s atom counts without specifying how its atoms connect.
Gasoline: Gasoline is a volatile liquid fuel blend used primarily in spark-ignition engines. Pentane and related light hydrocarbons occur in gasoline and contribute to its volatility.
Hexane: Hexane is an alkane with six carbon atoms and molecular formula C₆H₁₄. Adding one carbon raises the boiling point, making hexane less volatile than pentane.
Flammability: Flammability is the ability of a substance to ignite and sustain combustion under suitable conditions. Pentane vapor can ignite easily, so leaks and confined spaces create serious fire risks.
Isomerism: Isomerism occurs when compounds share a molecular formula but differ in atom connectivity or spatial arrangement. C₅H₁₂ has three structural arrangements, although pentane usually names the straight chain.
Structural formula: A structural formula represents how atoms are connected within a molecule. Pentane’s structural formula distinguishes its straight carbon chain from branched C₅H₁₂ isomers.
Pentane blowing agent: Pentane blowing agents are volatile hydrocarbons used to form cells in polymer foams. Pentane vapor expands polystyrene during foam production, creating its cellular structure.
Butane: Butane is an alkane with four carbon atoms and molecular formula C₄H₁₀. Butane is a smaller, more volatile alkane commonly stored as liquefied petroleum gas.
Flash point: Flash point is the lowest temperature at which a liquid emits enough vapor to ignite briefly near its surface. Pentane’s exceptionally low flash point reflects the ease with which its vapors ignite.
