People's Crusade

The People's Crusade was a largely unorganized popular expedition that set out for the Holy Land in 1096, ahead of the main armies of the First Crusade.

Peter the Hermit: A preacher who became the best-known leader of the popular expedition to the Holy Land in 1096. His preaching helped mobilize the expedition, though he did not command every group that joined it.
Council of Clermont: A church council held in 1095 where Pope Urban II called for a western expedition to aid eastern Christians and recover Jerusalem. Urban's appeal provided the religious and political setting for the popular mobilization.
Alexios I Komnenos: Byzantine emperor from 1081 to 1118 who sought western military aid against the Seljuk Turks. He received the expedition at Constantinople and arranged its passage into Asia Minor.
Princes' Crusade: The principal aristocratic armies that traveled east in 1096–1097 as part of the First Crusade. Its noble commanders and more structured forces contrasted with the People's Crusade's improvised bands.
Walter Sans-Avoir: A French knight who led an early contingent of the People's Crusade toward Constantinople. His contingent departed before Peter the Hermit's larger following and faced severe supply shortages.
Pope Urban II: The pope from 1088 to 1099 who called for the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. His call inspired the wider crusading movement but did not organize Peter's followers as a formal army.

Coloman of Hungary: King of Hungary from 1095 to 1116, who negotiated passage for crusading forces across his kingdom. His dealings with the poorly disciplined expedition reveal the dangers it posed along its route.
Crusade: A religiously authorized military expedition, especially one undertaken by Latin Christians to recover or defend sacred territories. The expedition drew on the crusading ideal before the principal armies departed.
