Pepin of Herstal

Pepin of Herstal was a Frankish aristocrat who ruled much of the Frankish kingdom as mayor of the palace from 680 until his death in 714.

Arnulfing family: A Frankish aristocratic dynasty descended from Arnulf of Metz and associated with the rise of the Carolingians. Pepin's family connections helped establish the political base from which he dominated the kingdom.
Mayor of the palace: A senior official of the Merovingian court who came to direct royal administration and military affairs. Pepin used this office to govern in the king's name and command the kingdom's resources.
