Pepin the Short

Pepin the Short was king of the Franks from 751 to 768, founder of the Carolingian dynasty, and father of Charlemagne.

Charles Martel: Frankish mayor of the palace who defeated a Muslim force near Tours in 732 and strengthened Carolingian power. Pepin inherited political influence from his father, Charles Martel.
Charlemagne: Frankish king and emperor who expanded his father Pepin’s realm and became the Carolingian dynasty’s most famous ruler. Pepin’s son inherited the kingdom and extended its power.
Anointing of Pepin: The 751 consecration of Pepin as king, which presented his rule as sanctioned by the Church. It gave Pepin’s dynastic change a distinctive religious ceremony.
Donation of Constantine: A forged Roman imperial document that claimed Constantine granted the pope extensive authority and territory. Unlike Pepin’s documented grants, this later forgery offered a false ancient basis for papal claims.
Siege of Narbonne: The Frankish siege of Narbonne, which ended in 759 with the city’s surrender to Pepin. Its capture completed Pepin’s removal of Muslim political control from Septimania.
Childeric III: The last Merovingian king, deposed in 751 when Pepin became king. His removal marked the end of the dynasty Pepin replaced.
Carloman I: Pepin’s elder son, who shared rule with Charlemagne after their father’s death. The succession divided Pepin’s kingdom between his two sons.
Donation of Pepin: Pepin’s grants of territory in central Italy to the papacy after his campaigns against the Lombards. His conquests and grants created a territorial basis for papal rule.
Carolingian Empire: The empire established by Charlemagne, Pepin’s son, through the expansion and consolidation of Frankish rule. Pepin’s kingdom provided the foundation for his son’s imperial expansion.
Aquitaine War: A prolonged conflict between Frankish rulers and the independent duchy of Aquitaine in the eighth century. Pepin spent much of his reign subduing Aquitaine and incorporating it into his realm.
