Percentage

A percentage is a proportion expressed as a number of parts per hundred and written with the percent sign (%). It allows proportions to be compared using a common scale.

Fraction: A number that represents part of a whole or a quotient of two numbers. A percentage is a fraction whose denominator is 100.
Percentage change: The change in a quantity expressed as a percentage of its original value. It applies percentage scaling to compare a before-and-after quantity.
Value-added tax: A consumption tax charged on the value added to goods and services at successive production stages. Tax rates are commonly stated as percentages of taxable prices.
Per mille: A proportion expressed as parts per thousand and marked with the symbol ‰. It uses a thousand-part scale rather than the hundred-part scale of percentages.
Ratio: A comparison of two quantities by division. Percentages express a part-to-whole ratio on a scale of 100.
Percentage point: A unit equal to the arithmetic difference between two percentages. It prevents confusing an absolute percentage difference with a relative change.
Discount: A reduction in a price or charge, often stated as a fraction or percentage of the original amount. A percentage discount is calculated from a stated base price.
Basis point: One hundredth of a percentage point, equal to 0.01%. It measures small rate changes more precisely than whole percentage points.
Decimal: A number written using a base-ten place-value system and a decimal point. Dividing a percentage by 100 converts it to decimal form.
Compound interest: Interest calculated on both principal and accumulated interest. A percentage rate is repeatedly applied to a growing balance.
