Percy Williams Bridgman

Percy Williams Bridgman (1882–1961) was an American physicist whose high-pressure experiments established much of modern high-pressure physics. He developed the Bridgman seal and received the 1946 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Bridgman seal: A self-tightening seal that uses fluid pressure to press a gasket against a vessel’s closure. Bridgman developed this seal to contain fluids at very high pressures.
Nobel Prize in Physics: An annual international award recognizing major contributions to physics. Bridgman received the 1946 prize for inventions and discoveries in high-pressure physics.
Hydrostatic pressure: Pressure exerted uniformly by a fluid at rest on surfaces immersed in it. Bridgman used fluid pressure to compress samples while limiting uneven mechanical forces.
Bridgmanite: The magnesium iron silicate mineral that is the most abundant mineral in Earth’s lower mantle. The mineral was named in Bridgman’s honor for his high-pressure mineral physics.
High-pressure physics: The study of matter under pressures far above ordinary atmospheric conditions. This field grew substantially through Bridgman’s experimental methods and measurements.
Harvard University: A private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded in 1636. Bridgman studied and spent his academic career at Harvard.
Pressure: Force distributed over a unit area of a surface. The controlled application and measurement of pressure underpinned Bridgman’s experiments.
Operational definition: A definition that specifies a concept through the procedures used to measure or identify it. Bridgman’s operationalism made measurement procedures central to defining scientific concepts.
Diamond anvil cell: A device that compresses a tiny sample between opposing diamond tips to generate extreme pressure. It extends high-pressure research with a compact technique developed after Bridgman’s pioneering apparatus.
Operationalism: The philosophical view that a scientific concept is defined by the operations used to measure it. Bridgman developed this account of scientific concepts alongside his experimental work.
