Peredvizhniki

The Peredvizhniki, or Wanderers, were a Russian artists’ association that organized traveling exhibitions outside the imperial academy system from 1870 to 1923.

Fourteen's Revolt: A protest in 1863 in which fourteen students left the Imperial Academy of Arts after rejecting its prescribed competition subject. The walkout by future founders established the group’s opposition to the Academy’s restrictions.
Traveling art exhibition: An exhibition that moves between venues rather than remaining in one location. Mobility was the association’s defining method for extending the reach of its art.
Russian realism: A movement in Russian art and literature that depicted contemporary life and social conditions in recognizable detail. The Peredvizhniki became the best-known visual-art movement associated with Russian realism.
Barge Haulers on the Volga: Ilya Repin’s 1870–1873 painting of laborers hauling a barge along the Volga River. Repin’s depiction of exhausting labor became a landmark of the group’s social observation.
Russian avant-garde: A group of early twentieth-century Russian movements that developed radical new forms in painting, design, and performance. Its formal experiments later challenged the realist tradition the Peredvizhniki had established.
Imperial Academy of Arts: Russia’s state-sponsored institution for art education and professional recognition, founded in Saint Petersburg in 1757. The Peredvizhniki built an exhibition network independent of this institution’s authority.
Russian art exhibition of 1871: The first exhibition organized by the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, held in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. This inaugural show demonstrated the association’s two-city exhibition model.
Social realism: Art that depicts social conditions and class relations with attention to ordinary people and everyday life. Many of the group’s paintings made hardship and inequality visible to a broad public.
The Rooks Have Returned: Aleksey Savrasov’s 1871 landscape painting of rooks returning to a village in early spring. Its modest rural scene exemplifies the emotional force the group found in Russian landscapes.
Abramtsevo Colony: An artists’ community near Moscow that fostered painting, theater, architecture, and crafts in the late nineteenth century. It offered another model of artistic community alongside the Peredvizhniki’s traveling exhibitions.
