Perennialism

Perennialism is an educational philosophy that centers teaching on enduring ideas, enduring questions, and influential works rather than changing practical needs.

Great Books: A curriculum or collection organized around influential works, especially texts regarded as enduring contributions to human thought. Perennialist programs often use these works as primary material for sustained study.
Didactic method: A teaching approach in which the instructor directly presents and explains subject matter. Perennialist classrooms commonly rely on explicit instruction to introduce demanding ideas.
Robert Maynard Hutchins: An American educator and university president who championed liberal education and the study of the Great Books. Hutchins helped bring perennialist ideas into twentieth-century debates about higher education.
John Dewey: An American philosopher and educator who argued for learning through experience, inquiry, and democratic participation. Dewey’s educational philosophy challenged fixed curricula detached from students’ changing experiences.

Constructivism: A theory of learning in which learners actively build understanding through experience and interpretation. Constructivism gives learners’ knowledge-building a central role, unlike perennialism’s prescribed intellectual canon.
