Period (time interval)

A period is a span of time between two events or the duration required for a recurring process to complete one cycle.

Time: The dimension in which events occur in sequence and durations are measured. A period is a measured span along this dimension.
Oscillation: Repeated variation about an equilibrium or central value. Successive matching points in an oscillation delimit its period.
Wave: A traveling or standing disturbance that transfers energy through space or a medium. A wave’s period is the time between successive repetitions at a fixed position.
Sampling interval: The elapsed time between successive measurements in a sampled signal. It sets how often a signal is observed and need not equal the signal’s period.
Duration: The amount of time an event or process lasts. A period is one specific kind of duration, defined by its endpoints or cycle.
Simple harmonic motion: Periodic motion in which displacement varies sinusoidally with time. Its period can be calculated from the system’s restoring force and inertia.
Wavelength: The spatial distance between corresponding points on successive cycles of a wave. Together with wave speed, wavelength determines a wave’s period.
Beat frequency: The rate at which two nearby frequencies alternately reinforce and cancel. Its beat period differs from the individual periods of the combined tones.
Frequency: The number of repetitions of a recurring event per unit time. Frequency and period describe the same repetition rate in reciprocal ways.
Pendulum: A suspended mass that swings under gravity, producing approximately periodic motion at small angles. A pendulum provides a familiar physical cycle whose duration depends on length and gravity.
