Permittivity

Permittivity relates electric displacement to electric field in a material. It describes how the material responds to an applied electric field and affects the strength of electric interactions within it.

Electric displacement field: A vector field that accounts for free charge and material polarization in electromagnetic equations. Permittivity relates this field to the electric field in a material.
Vacuum permittivity: The permittivity of vacuum, a physical constant setting the scale of electric interactions in SI units. It provides the reference value used to define relative permittivity.
Capacitance: A measure of a system’s ability to store electric charge per unit voltage. A dielectric’s permittivity helps determine a capacitor’s capacitance.
Permeability: A material property relating magnetic flux density to magnetic field strength. It describes magnetic response, whereas permittivity describes electric response.
Electric susceptibility: A measure of how strongly a material polarizes in response to an electric field. It quantifies the polarization response that contributes to permittivity.
Coulomb's law: The law describing the electrostatic force between stationary point charges. In a uniform medium, permittivity determines the strength of this force.
Parallel-plate capacitor: A capacitor formed by two parallel conducting plates separated by an insulating gap. For fixed geometry, its capacitance is proportional to the gap’s permittivity.
Conductivity: A measure of how readily a material carries electric current under an applied electric field. Conductivity governs conduction current; permittivity governs electric displacement.
Dielectric polarization: The formation of electric dipole moments in a material under an electric field. Polarization is the material response represented in its permittivity.
SI derived unit: A unit formed algebraically from SI base units. Permittivity is measured in farads per metre, an SI derived unit.
