Persian miniature

Persian miniature is a tradition of small-scale painting associated with Persianate courts and manuscripts. It is distinguished by vivid color, intricate detail, and compositions depicting literature, history, and court life.

Persianate manuscript: A handwritten book produced within Persian-speaking or Persian-influenced cultures, often combining calligraphy, painting, and ornament. Miniatures commonly appeared as illustrations embedded in these decorated books.
Ilkhanate: A Mongol dynasty that ruled Iran and neighboring regions from the thirteenth to the fourteenth century. Ilkhanid manuscripts helped establish enduring conventions for Persian illustrated painting.
Shahnameh: An epic poem by Ferdowsi recounting the legendary and historical kings of Iran. Its dramatic episodes became among the most frequently illustrated subjects in Persian manuscripts.
Kamal ud-Din Behzad: A Persian painter active around the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, associated with Herat and the Safavid court. Behzad’s compositions and expressive figures became models for later Persian painters.
Byzantine manuscript illumination: The painting and ornamentation of manuscripts in the Byzantine Empire and its cultural sphere. It offers a different religious and imperial manuscript tradition for comparison.

Sultan Muhammad: A Persian painter of the sixteenth century associated with the Safavid court workshop. His richly inventive scenes exemplify the height of Safavid manuscript painting.
Chinese painting: A diverse painting tradition developed in China across court, literati, and religious settings. Chinese landscape and brushwork conventions entered Persianate art through artistic exchange, but followed distinct aims.
