Persona (literature)

A literary persona is a constructed speaking voice distinct from the author as a biographical person. It shapes how a poem or other work presents its speaker.

Lyric speaker: The voice that speaks in a lyric poem, whether or not it resembles the poet. A persona often takes the form of a lyric speaker whose identity is crafted by the poem.
Point of view (literature): The position from which a literary work presents events, thoughts, or speech. A persona’s viewpoint determines what the voice can know and how it interprets experience.
My Last Duchess: Robert Browning’s dramatic monologue spoken by a controlling Italian duke. The duke’s polished speech constructs a persona whose self-revelation exceeds his intended impression.
Confessional poetry: Poetry that foregrounds intimate personal experience, often including trauma and private life. Its apparent autobiographical directness can obscure the shaping role of poetic persona.
Narrator: The voice or agent that tells a story. A narrator tells events; a persona may instead address an audience without narrating a story.
Unreliable narrator: A narrator whose account is compromised by limited knowledge, bias, or deception. A persona may be unreliable, making the distance between spoken claims and implied meaning central.
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock: T. S. Eliot’s poem presenting the anxious reflections of J. Alfred Prufrock. Prufrock is a named poetic speaker, not a transparent substitute for Eliot’s biography.
Autobiography: A nonfiction account of a person’s life written by that person. Autobiography presents the author as its subject, while a literary persona is a constructed voice.
Authorial intention: The purpose an author intends to express through a work. A persona’s statements do not automatically reveal what the author personally intends.
Irony: A contrast between an apparent meaning and a different intended or understood meaning. Irony lets a work expose limits in its persona’s understanding without direct authorial comment.
