Personality psychology

Personality psychology studies individual differences in characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior, and how those patterns develop and shape people’s lives.

Trait theory: An approach that describes personality through relatively enduring dimensions of individual difference. It frames personality as measurable traits that vary between people.
Person–situation debate: A debate over whether behavior is explained more by stable personality traits or by situational influences. It sharpened questions about when personality predicts behavior.
Gordon Allport: An American psychologist who helped establish personality as a distinct subject of psychological study. His work promoted the systematic study of individual lives and traits.
Personality test: A procedure designed to measure personality characteristics through responses, judgments, or observed behavior. Tests operationalize personality theories for research and practical assessment.
Behaviorism: A psychological approach that explains behavior primarily through observable actions and learning histories. Its focus on learning challenged theories centered on internal personality structures.
Big Five personality traits: A model describing personality through openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. It is the best-known broad trait framework in contemporary personality research.
Interactionism (personality psychology): The view that behavior results from ongoing interactions between personal characteristics and situations. It offers a framework beyond treating traits and situations as competing explanations.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and proposed that unconscious conflicts shape personality and behavior. His theory made unconscious motivation central to early personality psychology.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory: A standardized self-report instrument developed to assess psychological symptoms and personality-related patterns. It illustrates how personality assessment can serve clinical as well as research purposes.
Social cognitive theory: An approach explaining behavior through interactions among cognition, behavior, and the social environment. It treats beliefs and reciprocal environmental influence as central alongside traits.
