Personhood

Personhood is the status of being recognized as a person with moral or legal standing. Its criteria and consequences vary across ethical, legal, and political contexts.

Moral status: The standing that makes an entity morally considerable and its interests worthy of consideration. Personhood often marks a threshold for direct moral consideration.
Biological humanity: Membership in the human species, typically identified through biological characteristics. It grounds some accounts of personhood in species membership rather than psychological capacities.
Corporate personhood: The legal treatment of corporations as persons for specified rights, duties, and procedures. It demonstrates how law can grant person-like standing to nonhuman entities.
Boethius: A late antique Roman philosopher who defined a person as an individual substance of a rational nature. His definition became a durable starting point for Western discussions of personhood.
Persistent vegetative state: A prolonged disorder of consciousness in which wakefulness occurs without reliable evidence of awareness. It raises questions about whether consciousness is necessary for continuing personhood.
Human rights: Rights understood to belong to every human being, regardless of citizenship or social position. Legal recognition as a person is central to holding rights against states and other actors.
Consciousness: The condition of having subjective experience, including awareness of sensations or thoughts. Capacity-based accounts often treat conscious experience as relevant to moral standing.
Animal personhood: The view that some nonhuman animals should receive legal or moral recognition as persons. It tests whether capacities such as memory and agency can support personhood beyond humans.
John Locke: A seventeenth-century English philosopher who connected personhood with consciousness, memory, and self-identification. Locke's account shifted attention from substance to continuity of consciousness.
Brain death: The irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brainstem, under accepted medical criteria. Its legal use as death separates personhood from the persistence of some bodily functions.
