Peru–Chile Trench

The Peru–Chile Trench is a deep ocean trench off western South America, formed where the Nazca Plate descends beneath the South American Plate.

Nazca Plate: An oceanic tectonic plate beneath the southeastern Pacific Ocean that moves eastward toward South America. Its descent beneath South America creates the trench.
2010 Chile earthquake: A magnitude 8.8 megathrust earthquake that struck central Chile on February 27, 2010. Its rupture occurred on the Nazca–South American plate boundary offshore.
