Pete Rozelle

Pete Rozelle was an American sports executive who served as National Football League commissioner from 1960 to 1989. He helped build the league into a dominant national sports institution.

American Football League: The professional football league that competed with the NFL from 1960 until their 1970 merger. Its rivalry with the NFL drove expansion and forced Rozelle to negotiate a merger.
NFL commissioner: The chief executive who oversees the National Football League and enforces its rules and policies. The office gave Rozelle authority to coordinate owners, discipline, and league policy.
