Peter Artedi

Peter Artedi (1705–1735) was a Swedish naturalist whose systematic classification and descriptions of fishes helped establish ichthyology as a scientific discipline.

Ichthyology: The branch of zoology concerned with fishes, including their classification, anatomy, behavior, and distribution. Artedi’s work helped make the study of fishes a distinct, systematic discipline.
Systema Naturae: Carl Linnaeus’s work presenting a hierarchical system for naming and classifying nature. Its early editions incorporated fish classifications derived from Artedi’s research.
