Peter Debye

Peter Debye was a Dutch-American physicist and physical chemist whose work shaped the study of molecular dipoles, X-ray diffraction, and heat capacities. He received the 1936 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Dipole moment: A measure of the separation of positive and negative electric charge in a system. Debye developed methods for measuring molecular dipole moments and using them to infer molecular structure.
Debye model: A model of a solid’s heat capacity that treats its vibrations as quantized sound modes. It is Debye’s best-known account of why heat capacity falls at low temperatures.
Erich Hückel: A German physical chemist known for theories of electrolytes and molecular electronic structure. Hückel collaborated with Debye on the theory of dilute electrolyte solutions.
Maastricht: A city in the southeastern Netherlands, where Peter Debye was born in 1884. Debye’s Dutch upbringing began in this city before his university studies in Germany.
Infrared spectroscopy: A technique that identifies molecular vibrations by measuring absorption of infrared radiation. Debye’s studies of molecular dipoles helped connect molecular structure with spectroscopic behavior.
Dielectric constant: A measure of how strongly a material reduces an electric field within it. Debye connected dielectric behavior to the orientation and motion of polar molecules.
Debye length: The characteristic distance over which mobile charges screen an electric field in a plasma or electrolyte. Debye’s work on electrolytes led to this measure of electrostatic screening.
Paul Scherrer: A Swiss physicist who helped develop powder X-ray diffraction methods. Scherrer and Debye jointly devised a method for analyzing crystalline powders.
RWTH Aachen University: A German technical university founded in Aachen in 1870. Debye studied electrical engineering there and earned his doctorate in physics.
Raman spectroscopy: A technique that probes molecular vibrations through shifts in the frequency of scattered light. The molecular polarizability concepts developed alongside Debye’s work underpin interpretation of Raman scattering.
