Peter Faber

Peter Faber (1506–1546) was a French Jesuit priest and theologian, one of the Society of Jesus’s founding members. He was canonized by Pope Francis in 2013.

Ignatius of Loyola: A Spanish priest who founded the Society of Jesus and wrote the Spiritual Exercises. Faber studied theology with Ignatius in Paris and joined his early circle.
Spiritual Exercises: A set of Christian meditations and practices developed by Ignatius of Loyola for spiritual discernment. Faber used this method in retreats and personal guidance.
Council of Trent: A series of Catholic Church councils held between 1545 and 1563 that addressed doctrine and reform. Faber attended its opening session in 1545 as a papal theologian.
Canonization: The Catholic Church’s formal declaration that a deceased person is a saint and may be publicly venerated. Faber’s 2013 canonization formally recognized his sainthood centuries after his death.
Francis Xavier: A Navarrese Jesuit missionary who helped establish the Society of Jesus and evangelized across Asia. Faber shared studies and spiritual formation with Xavier at the University of Paris.
Spiritual direction: A practice in which one person helps another attend to and discern spiritual experience. Faber became known for guiding people through attentive spiritual conversation.
Colloquy of Worms: A 1540 meeting between Catholic and Protestant theologians in Worms, Germany. Faber took part in the Catholic delegation seeking discussion with Protestant reformers.
Jesuit missions: The evangelizing and educational activities undertaken by members of the Society of Jesus around the world. Faber’s itinerant ministry helped establish a model of mobile Jesuit pastoral service.
Diego Laínez: A Spanish theologian and Jesuit who succeeded Ignatius of Loyola as superior general. Laínez belonged to the Paris circle that formed the first Jesuit companions with Faber.
Discernment of spirits: A Christian practice of distinguishing movements of the spirit by their origins and effects. Faber’s guidance applied Ignatian discernment to people’s inner experiences.
