Petrified Forest National Park

A national park in northeastern Arizona that protects fossilized trees, colorful badlands, and archaeological sites, including remains of ancient Pueblo communities.

Triassic petrified wood: Fossil wood formed when minerals replaced or filled the tissues of trees buried during the Triassic Period. The park’s namesake logs preserve Triassic forests, especially in the Chinle Formation.
Chinle Formation: A Late Triassic rock formation in the southwestern United States, composed mainly of river and floodplain deposits. Its sediments contain much of the park’s petrified wood and record ancient river environments.
Chinle Group: A suite of Late Triassic sedimentary rock formations found across parts of the southwestern United States. The park’s fossil-bearing Chinle Formation belongs to this broader regional rock sequence.
National Park Service: The United States federal agency that manages national parks and other designated natural and cultural sites. The agency administers the park’s fossils, archaeological resources, and visitor facilities.
Painted Desert: A badlands region of northern Arizona marked by colorful layered rocks and eroded hills. The park protects a southern section of this landscape, where Chinle Formation layers create vivid slopes.
Petrifaction: The process by which organic material is preserved as minerals fill or replace its tissues. Mineral-rich groundwater transformed buried wood into the park’s stone logs.
Late Triassic: The final epoch of the Triassic Period, lasting from about 237 to 201 million years ago. Many of the park’s fossil forests and vertebrate fossils date to this interval.
Antiquities Act of 1906: A United States law authorizing presidents to establish national monuments and protect significant cultural and natural resources. It enabled the initial federal protection of the Petrified Forest in 1906.
Puerco Pueblo: Ancestral Puebloan village ruins beside the Puerco River in Petrified Forest National Park. Its masonry rooms and nearby petroglyphs anchor the park’s archaeological story.
Silicification: The introduction or formation of silica in rock or organic material, often preserving fine structural detail. Silica helped preserve wood anatomy as mineralized logs in the park.
