Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a Russian port city on Avacha Bay, on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is the administrative center of Kamchatka Krai and a gateway to the peninsula’s volcanoes and Pacific coast.

Kamchatka Peninsula: A volcanic peninsula in Russia’s Far East, extending south between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk. The city occupies the peninsula’s southeastern coast, far from Russia’s main population centers.
Vitus Bering: A Danish-born explorer in Russian service who led expeditions across the North Pacific in the eighteenth century. His 1740 expedition established the settlement that became Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Siege of Petropavlovsk: An 1854 Crimean War battle in which Russian defenders repelled an Anglo-French attack on Petropavlovsk. The siege made the city a notable Pacific theater of the Crimean War.

Yelizovo: A town in Kamchatka Krai near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, home to the peninsula’s principal airport. Air travelers often arrive in Yelizovo before continuing to the regional capital.
Avacha Bay: A deep, sheltered bay on Kamchatka’s southeastern coast, opening into the Pacific Ocean. Its protected waters provide the natural harbor on which the city is built.
