Phallic stage

In Freudian theory, the phallic stage is a psychosexual stage, usually placed between ages three and six, in which attention centers on the genitals and children develop unconscious family attachments.

Oedipus complex: In Freudian theory, a child’s unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent and rivalry with the same-sex parent. Freud treated this conflict as the phallic stage’s central developmental drama.
Psychosexual development: Freud’s theory that personality develops through childhood stages organized around changing sources of libidinal pleasure. The phallic stage is one phase in this broader developmental sequence.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and developed influential theories of the unconscious and psychosexual development. He introduced the phallic stage as part of his account of childhood sexuality.
Empirical psychology: The systematic study of psychological claims through observation, measurement, and evidence-based testing. Freud’s stage theory is difficult to test using this field’s standards.
