Pharmacodynamics

Pharmacodynamics studies how drugs affect biological systems, including their mechanisms of action and the relationships between drug concentration and effect.

Drug–receptor interaction: The binding and functional relationship between a drug and a biological target. Drug–target binding is a central step connecting exposure to biological response.
Dose–response relationship: The relationship between the amount of a substance and the magnitude of its effect. It provides the basic framework for quantifying how drug exposure changes response.
Therapeutic drug monitoring: The measurement of drug concentrations in blood to guide treatment decisions. Concentration measurements are useful when interpreted alongside the effects they are meant to predict.
Pharmacokinetics: The study of how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and eliminates drugs. Pharmacokinetics describes drug concentrations in the body; pharmacodynamics describes what those concentrations do.
Receptor agonist: A ligand that binds a receptor and activates its signaling pathway. Agonists produce effects by activating receptors rather than merely occupying them.
Potency (pharmacology): The amount of a drug needed to produce a specified effect. Potency compares the concentrations or doses required to reach a defined response.
Pharmacogenomics: The study of how genetic variation affects responses to drugs. Genetic differences can alter targets and downstream responses, changing pharmacodynamic effects.
Pharmacology: The science of drugs, including their actions, uses, and effects on living systems. Pharmacodynamics is one branch of the broader study of drugs.
Receptor antagonist: A ligand that binds a receptor and blocks activation by agonists. Antagonists show how receptor occupancy can reduce or prevent a drug response.
Efficacy (pharmacology): The maximum effect a drug can produce through a given biological system. Efficacy distinguishes a drug’s achievable maximum from the concentration needed to act.
