Phenethylamine

Phenethylamine is an aromatic amine with a benzene ring joined to an amino group by a two-carbon chain. Its scaffold occurs in many natural and synthetic compounds.

Benzene: Benzene is a six-carbon aromatic ring with alternating electron density and formula C₆H₆. This ring is the aromatic part of phenethylamine’s structure.
Acid–base equilibrium: Acid–base equilibrium describes the reversible transfer of protons between acids and bases. The amino group can accept a proton, changing phenethylamine’s charge and solubility.
Amphetamine: Amphetamine is a synthetic central nervous system stimulant and a substituted phenethylamine. Adding an α-methyl group to the scaffold gives amphetamine its defining structure.
Benzylamine: Benzylamine is a primary amine in which an amino group is attached directly to a methylene group bonded to benzene. Its chain has one carbon between the ring and nitrogen, unlike phenethylamine’s two.
Primary amine: A primary amine is a nitrogen-containing compound in which nitrogen is bonded to one carbon group and two hydrogens. Phenethylamine’s nitrogen is attached to one carbon group, making its amine primary.
Henderson–Hasselbalch equation: The Henderson–Hasselbalch equation relates a weak acid or base’s ionization to pH and its pKa. It estimates how much phenethylamine is protonated at a given pH.
Tyramine: Tyramine is a naturally occurring trace amine formed by decarboxylation of tyrosine. Its hydroxy-substituted phenethylamine structure occurs in foods and affects monoamine signaling.
Aniline: Aniline is an aromatic amine in which an amino group is bonded directly to a benzene ring. Its nitrogen attaches directly to the ring rather than through phenethylamine’s carbon chain.
Ethyl group: An ethyl group is a two-carbon alkyl group with formula –CH₂CH₃. The two-carbon chain separates phenethylamine’s benzene ring from its amino group.
Monoamine oxidase: Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme family that oxidatively deaminates monoamine neurotransmitters and related compounds. It rapidly metabolizes phenethylamine, limiting its persistence in the body.
