Phenology

Phenology is the study of the timing of recurring biological events, such as flowering, leaf emergence, and migration, and how that timing relates to seasons and climate.

Photoperiodism: A biological response to changes in day length, often regulating seasonal development and reproduction. Day length can cue flowering, dormancy, and migration independently of short-term weather.
Phenological mismatch: A disruption in the timing relationship between interacting species or between organisms and resources. Different responses to warming can separate consumers from their seasonal food supplies.
Carl Linnaeus: A Swedish botanist who developed a system for naming organisms and advanced natural history in the eighteenth century. Linnaeus proposed organizing plant observations around recurring seasonal events.
Seasonality: The recurring variation in environmental or biological conditions over the course of a year. Phenology studies the biological timing embedded within seasonal cycles.
Chronobiology: The study of biological timing, including daily, seasonal, and other recurring rhythms. Chronobiology emphasizes timing mechanisms, while phenology emphasizes event dates in natural settings.
Growing degree day: A measure of accumulated warmth above a chosen temperature threshold, used to estimate biological development. Heat accumulation helps explain why many events occur after a species-specific seasonal threshold.
Bioindicator: An organism or biological response used to assess environmental conditions. Changes in flowering or migration dates can indicate shifts in local climate.
Robert Marsham: An English naturalist who kept long-term records of seasonal biological events beginning in the eighteenth century. His detailed Nature's Calendar records became an early model for systematic phenological observation.
Life cycle: The sequence of developmental stages an organism passes through during its life. Phenological events are timed stages within organisms' life cycles.
Climate phenology: The analysis of relationships between climatic variation and the timing of biological events. This narrower approach focuses on climate associations within the broader study of phenology.
