Phenomenology of religion

An approach to studying religion that describes and interprets religious phenomena while attending to how they appear within participants’ experience.

Epoché: A methodological suspension of assumptions or judgments while examining a phenomenon. Bracketing prior commitments helps describe religious phenomena on their own terms.
Edmund Husserl: A German philosopher who founded transcendental phenomenology. His account of intentional consciousness supplied a major philosophical resource for studying religious experience.
Reductionism: An explanatory strategy that accounts for complex phenomena by reducing them to more basic processes. Phenomenological description resists replacing religious meanings with psychological, social, or material causes.
