Phenomenology

Phenomenology is a philosophical approach that investigates structures of experience as they appear from the first-person perspective. It describes how things are experienced before explaining them through external theories.

Intentionality: The directedness of consciousness toward objects, thoughts, or states of affairs. Phenomenological analysis asks how experience is directed toward what appears.
Edmund Husserl: A German philosopher who founded modern phenomenology and developed its methods of reduction and intentional analysis. He established phenomenology as a systematic philosophical research program.
Consciousness: The condition of having subjective awareness or experience. Phenomenology examines the structures and contents of conscious experience.
Naturalism: The view that reality and human beings belong to the natural world studied by the sciences. Phenomenology resists treating first-person experience as fully explained by natural-scientific accounts.
Epoché: A suspension of judgment about the existence of the external world or other assumptions. Husserl uses this suspension to examine experience without relying on assumptions about reality.
Franz Brentano: A philosopher whose account of mental phenomena emphasized their directedness toward objects. His account of intentionality helped shape Husserl’s early conception of consciousness.
First-person perspective: A mode of access to experience from the standpoint of the subject undergoing it. It defines the standpoint from which phenomenological descriptions begin.
Introspection: The examination of one’s own thoughts and feelings through inward attention. Phenomenology is systematic inquiry into experience, not merely private self-observation.
Phenomenological reduction: A method of redirecting attention from objects as independently existing to the ways they appear in experience. It develops the epoché into a focused inquiry into appearance.
Martin Heidegger: A German philosopher who reoriented phenomenology toward being, existence, and human involvement in the world. His work recast phenomenology as an investigation of existence rather than consciousness alone.
