Phenylacetic acid

Phenylacetic acid is an aromatic carboxylic acid with formula C₆H₅CH₂COOH. It occurs in plants and serves as a building block in chemical synthesis.

Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, –COOH, which can donate a proton. Phenylacetic acid belongs to this family through its terminal –COOH group.
Phenylacetate: The conjugate base or an ester-derived anion of phenylacetic acid, depending on context. Deprotonation of its carboxyl group forms the phenylacetate ion.
Phenylacetate esters: Esters derived from phenylacetic acid, used in fragrance and flavor formulations and chemical synthesis. These derivatives retain its carbon framework while changing the carboxyl group.
Benzoic acid: An aromatic carboxylic acid with formula C₆H₅COOH, in which the carboxyl group attaches directly to the ring. Unlike phenylacetic acid, its carboxyl group is directly attached to the benzene ring.

Methylene group: A –CH₂– unit connecting two parts of an organic molecule. This group separates the phenyl ring from the carboxyl group.
Decarboxylation: A chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group as carbon dioxide. Removing its carboxyl carbon can yield a benzyl-derived product.
