Phenylpropanoid

A plant-derived natural product built around a nine-carbon phenylpropane skeleton. Phenylpropanoids include compounds that plants use in structural materials, pigmentation, defense, and signaling.

Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase: An enzyme that converts phenylalanine into cinnamic acid by removing ammonia. It catalyzes the entry step from amino-acid metabolism into phenylpropanoid biosynthesis.
Phenyl group: A benzene ring acting as a substituent after loss of one hydrogen atom. It supplies the aromatic six-carbon portion of the characteristic carbon framework.
Lignin: A complex aromatic polymer that strengthens and waterproofs plant cell walls. Phenylpropanoid-derived monolignols polymerize to form this major structural material.
Plant secondary metabolism: The production of specialized metabolites that support plant interactions, defense, and adaptation. Phenylpropanoids form one of the largest and most varied branches of this metabolism.
Cinnamic acid: An aromatic carboxylic acid with a three-carbon side chain, occurring naturally in plants. This product of the pathway’s entry reaction provides the core carbon framework for many phenylpropanoids.
Propane: A three-carbon saturated hydrocarbon with the formula C3H8. The term phenylpropane names the three-carbon side chain attached to a phenyl group.
Flavonoid: A large family of plant polyphenols with a characteristic fifteen-carbon framework. Phenylpropanoid metabolism combines with acetate-derived units to produce this diverse family.
Plant cell wall: A rigid extracellular structure that supports and protects plant cells. Lignin, a major phenylpropanoid-derived polymer, alters wall strength and water transport.
Cinnamate 4-hydroxylase: A cytochrome P450 enzyme that hydroxylates cinnamate at the para position of its aromatic ring. Its reaction forms p-coumarate, a central branching point in phenylpropanoid metabolism.
Aromaticity: The unusual stability and electronic structure of cyclic, conjugated molecules such as benzene. Aromatic-ring chemistry explains many substitutions that diversify phenylpropanoid structures.
