Philip IV of Spain

Philip IV ruled Spain from 1621 to 1665 and Portugal until 1640. His reign brought prolonged European wars, domestic revolts, and a weakening of Spanish power.

Portuguese Restoration War: The war from 1640 to 1668 through which Portugal secured independence from Spain. Portugal’s revolt in 1640 ended the Iberian union under Philip IV.
Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares: Philip IV’s chief minister from 1621 to 1643 and the principal architect of his domestic and foreign policies. Olivares drove centralizing reforms and wartime mobilization in Philip’s name.
Isabella of Bourbon: Queen consort of Spain from 1621 to 1644 and the first wife of Philip IV. She served as regent during Philip’s absences and became a prominent political figure.
