Philip V of Spain

Philip V was the first Bourbon king of Spain, ruling from 1700 to 1724 and again from 1724 to 1746. His reign brought dynastic war and centralized reforms that reshaped the monarchy.

Nueva Planta decrees: A series of royal decrees that abolished the institutions and laws of several Crown of Aragon territories. These decrees extended Castilian institutions across much of Spain after Philip’s victory in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Charles II of Spain: The last Habsburg king of Spain, whose death in 1700 without an heir triggered a European succession crisis. His will named Philip as successor, setting off the conflict that defined Philip’s early reign.
Maria Luisa of Savoy: Philip V’s first wife, queen of Spain from 1701 until her death in 1714. She served as regent during Philip’s military campaigns and became a powerful presence at court.

Elisabeth Farnese: Philip V’s second wife, queen of Spain from 1714, who exercised substantial influence over court policy. Her efforts to secure Italian crowns for her children shaped Spain’s foreign policy.
Treaty of Utrecht: A set of 1713 treaties that recognized Philip as king of Spain while redistributing territories and limiting Bourbon dynastic union. It secured Philip’s Spanish crown but cost Spain much of its European empire.
Habsburg monarchy: A composite monarchy ruled by the House of Habsburg across central Europe and, until 1700, Spain. Its dynastic model differed from the Bourbon centralization Philip pursued in Spain.
