Philippine Sea Plate

The Philippine Sea Plate is an oceanic tectonic plate beneath the Philippine Sea. Its boundaries include major subduction zones where it converges with the Eurasian and Pacific plates.

Izu–Bonin–Mariana Arc: A volcanic island arc system extending south from Japan through the Mariana Islands. This arc marks the plate’s eastern boundary, where Pacific seafloor descends beneath it.
Plate tectonics: The theory that Earth’s outer shell consists of moving plates whose interactions shape the surface. It provides the framework for describing the Philippine Sea Plate and its boundaries.
Shikoku Basin: An extinct back-arc basin south of Japan, floored by oceanic crust formed during the Miocene. Its crust records spreading associated with the plate’s western-margin volcanic arc.
2011 Tōhoku earthquake: A magnitude 9.0 earthquake in northeastern Japan caused by rupture of the Japan Trench megathrust. Unlike the Nankai megathrust, this event occurred where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath Japan.
Philippine Trench: A deep ocean trench east of the Philippine archipelago, formed at a convergent plate boundary. It records subduction along the plate’s western boundary near the southern Philippines.
Eurasian Plate: A major tectonic plate carrying most of Europe and Asia. Its interaction with the Philippine Sea Plate shapes trenches and arcs along the latter’s western margin.
Parece Vela Basin: An extinct oceanic back-arc basin between the Kyushu–Palau Ridge and the Mariana arc. Its seafloor preserves a major episode of Philippine Sea Plate expansion.
2011 Tōhoku tsunami: A destructive tsunami generated by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. It illustrates the hazards of nearby subduction systems, though not the Philippine Sea Plate boundary.
Ryukyu Trench: A submarine trench extending southwest from Japan along the Ryukyu Islands. The trench marks convergence between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate.
Pacific Plate: The largest tectonic plate, underlying most of the Pacific Ocean basin. Its convergence with the Philippine Sea Plate drives subduction along the Izu–Bonin–Mariana system.
