Philippine Trench

The Philippine Trench is a deep-sea trench east of the Philippines, formed where the Philippine Sea Plate descends beneath the Philippine Mobile Belt.

Subduction: The process in which one tectonic plate descends beneath another into the mantle. The trench marks the surface expression of the Philippine Sea Plate descending beneath the Philippine Mobile Belt.
Philippine Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific, bordered by Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the Mariana Islands. The Philippine Trench lies along the sea’s western margin.
Emden Deep: A deep point in the Philippine Trench, reaching roughly 10,000 metres below sea level. It is the trench’s deepest known area and a benchmark for its depth.
Philippine Trench megathrust: The plate-boundary fault where the Philippine Sea Plate descends beneath the Philippine Mobile Belt. Its geometry and capacity for large earthquakes remain difficult to constrain.

Philippine Mobile Belt: A complex zone of Philippine crust between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates. This tectonically active belt overlies the plate descending at the trench.
Mariana Trench: A deep-sea trench in the western Pacific, formed at the boundary between the Pacific and Mariana plates. It is a nearby western Pacific trench, but belongs to a different subduction system.
