Philology is the scholarly study of language through historical texts, combining textual criticism, linguistic history, and the interpretation of literature and culture.

Textual criticism: The study of manuscript variants to establish and interpret the history of a text. It compares witnesses to recover a text’s transmission and assess its wording.
Alexandrian scholarship: The textual and literary scholarship practiced by learned communities in Hellenistic Alexandria. Its editors compared Greek manuscripts and established methods later associated with philology.
Aristarchus of Samothrace: A Hellenistic scholar of Alexandria known for editing and commenting on Homer. His critical signs and textual judgments became models for later classical editors.
Structural linguistics: An approach that studies language as a system of interdependent signs and relations. It analyzes linguistic structure at a given moment rather than centering historical textual evidence.

Renaissance humanism: An intellectual movement that renewed the study of classical texts, languages, and history. Humanists revived manuscript comparison and close reading of Greek and Latin works.
Richard Bentley: An English classical scholar renowned for textual criticism of Greek and Latin literature. Bentley used conjecture and linguistic evidence to challenge received classical texts.
Descriptive linguistics: The systematic description of how a language is used by its speakers. It can study living speech without the historical documents central to philological work.
New Testament textual criticism: The study of manuscript variants in the transmission of the New Testament. It applies collation and textual reasoning to a large, historically significant manuscript tradition.
