Philopoemen

Philopoemen was a Hellenistic Greek general and statesman who led the Achaean League in the third and second centuries BCE. He strengthened its military and political power while resisting Macedonian and Roman influence.

Aratus of Sicyon: A Greek statesman who led the Achaean League before Philopoemen and expanded its influence. Philopoemen succeeded Aratus as the League’s leading strategist and inherited his political project.
Achaean League: A federation of Greek cities in the northern Peloponnese, prominent from the third century BCE until Roman rule. It was the political and military federation Philopoemen led.
Megalopolis: A city in Arcadia founded in the fourth century BCE as a political center opposing Spartan power. Philopoemen was born in Megalopolis and remained closely associated with its interests.
Battle of Mantinea (207 BCE): A battle in 207 BCE in which the Achaean League under Philopoemen defeated Spartan forces led by Machanidas. Philopoemen’s victory over Sparta at Mantinea established his military reputation.
Nabis: The ruler of Sparta from about 207 to 192 BCE, known for radical reforms and conflict with neighboring states. Philopoemen fought Nabis in the Achaean League’s campaigns against Sparta.
Macedonian phalanx: A dense infantry formation whose soldiers used long pikes called sarissas. Philopoemen reorganized Achaean infantry to adopt the phalanx’s long pikes and close formation.
Arcadia: A region in the central Peloponnese of ancient Greece, comprising numerous communities and city-states. Philopoemen’s home city, Megalopolis, lay in Arcadia.
Battle of Mantinea (418 BCE): A battle in 418 BCE in which Sparta defeated an alliance led by Argos and Athens during the Peloponnesian War. This earlier Mantinea battle contrasts with Philopoemen’s later victory at the same place.
Titus Quinctius Flamininus: A Roman general who defeated Macedon and proclaimed the freedom of the Greek states in 196 BCE. His Roman settlement of Greece tested the independence Philopoemen sought to preserve.
Sarissa: A long pike used by infantry in the Macedonian phalanx and armies modeled on it. Achaean soldiers adopted this weapon as part of Philopoemen’s military reforms.
