Philosophy of mathematics

The branch of philosophy that examines what mathematical objects are, how mathematical knowledge is possible, and which methods and foundations justify mathematics.

Mathematical Platonism: The view that mathematical objects exist independently of human thought and language. It treats mathematical truths as discoveries about an abstract reality.
Mathematical proof: A deductive argument that establishes a mathematical conclusion from accepted assumptions and rules of inference. Proof is the principal standard for establishing mathematical results.
Formal system: A specified language together with axioms and rules for deriving formulas. Formal systems make precise what counts as a mathematical statement and derivation.
Ancient Greek mathematics: The mathematical traditions of ancient Greece, known for deductive geometry and systematic proof. Its proof-centered tradition helped shape enduring ideas about mathematical demonstration.
Applied mathematics: The use of mathematical methods to formulate and solve problems in science, engineering, and other fields. Its success in modeling the world raises questions about why mathematics applies so effectively.
Formalism (mathematics): The view that mathematics consists primarily of formal symbol systems governed by explicit rules. It explains mathematical practice through rule-governed symbol manipulation rather than abstract objects.
Axiom: A statement adopted as a starting assumption within a formal theory or mathematical system. The status and justification of axioms shape accounts of mathematical foundations.
Set theory: The mathematical study of sets, widely used as a foundational framework for other mathematical structures. Set theory provides a common framework for expressing much of modern mathematics.
