Phonology

Phonology studies how languages organize speech sounds into systems of contrasts and patterns. It describes which sound differences distinguish words and how sounds behave in context.

Phoneme: A contrastive sound category that can distinguish words in a language. Phonemes are the units whose contrasts define a language’s sound system.
Assimilation (linguistics): A sound change in which a segment becomes more like a nearby segment. Assimilation illustrates how neighboring sounds influence pronunciation.
Phonetics: The study of speech sounds as physical events, including their production, transmission, and perception. Phonetics describes physical sound properties; phonology explains their language-specific organization.
Ferdinand de Saussure: A Swiss linguist whose work helped establish structural approaches to language. His distinction between language-system relations and individual speech influenced structural phonology.
Language documentation: The recording and analysis of linguistic practices, often to preserve knowledge of endangered languages. Phonological descriptions document a language’s sound contrasts and distribution patterns.
Allophone: A context-dependent pronunciation variant of a phoneme that does not change word identity. Allophones show how one phoneme can have multiple predictable pronunciations.
Dissimilation: A sound change in which similar sounds become less alike. Dissimilation shows that sound patterns can avoid repeated articulatory or perceptual features.
Morphology (linguistics): The study of how words are formed from meaningful units such as roots and affixes. Morphology concerns word structure, though its boundaries can condition sound patterns.
Prague Linguistic Circle: A group of linguists founded in 1926 that developed influential structural approaches to language. Its members made phonological opposition and function central analytical tools.
Phonics: A method of teaching reading that connects written letters or groups with speech sounds. Phonics draws on sound-letter relations, which do not always map directly to phonemes.
