Phonotactics

Phonotactics is the set of language-specific constraints on how speech sounds combine and where they can occur within syllables and words.

Syllable: A unit of spoken language organized around a nucleus, usually a vowel, with optional consonants around it. Phonotactic constraints are often stated in terms of which sounds may occupy each syllable position.
Phonology: The study of how languages organize speech sounds into contrastive systems and patterns. Phonotactics is one part of a language’s broader sound-pattern system.
English phonology: The sound system and sound-pattern rules of the English language. English allows clusters such as /str/ at word beginnings but excludes many equally pronounceable sequences.
Speech segmentation: The process of identifying word boundaries in continuous spoken language. Listeners use familiar sound-sequence patterns as cues to likely word boundaries.
Phonotactic constraint: A restriction on which sound sequences or positions are permitted in a particular language. This is the specific rule-level notion underlying the broader pattern called phonotactics.
Phoneme: A contrastive sound category that can distinguish words in a particular language. Phonotactic patterns regulate combinations of the language’s phonemes, not every phonetic detail.
Phonetics: The study of the physical production, transmission, and perception of speech sounds. Phonetics describes possible sounds physically; phonotactics concerns their language-specific combinations.
Japanese phonology: The sound system and sound-pattern rules of the Japanese language. Japanese strongly restricts consonant clusters, often inserting vowels when adapting foreign words.
Language acquisition: The process by which humans learn to understand and use a language. Infants learn which sound sequences their language permits before mastering many individual words.
Phonotactic violation: A sound sequence that conflicts with the phonotactic constraints of a particular language. A violation is judged against a language’s rules, not against physical pronounceability alone.
