Knowra Phosphoryl chloride Phosphoryl chloride Phosphoryl chloride (POCl₃) is a colorless, fuming liquid that reacts with water and serves as a chlorinating and phosphorylating reagent in chemical synthesis.
Phosphorus oxychloride hydrolysis : The reaction of POCl₃ with water, producing phosphoric acid and hydrogen chloride. Moisture rapidly converts POCl₃ into corrosive acidic products.
DMF–POCl₃ complex : The electrophilic reagent formed when dimethylformamide reacts with POCl₃. This complex is the key activated intermediate in Vilsmeier formylation.
Phosphorus oxyacids : Acids containing phosphorus, oxygen, and hydrogen, including phosphoric and phosphorous acids. Hydrolysis of POCl₃ ultimately produces phosphoric acid.
Thionyl chloride : A reactive liquid, SOCl₂, widely used to convert carboxylic acids and alcohols into chlorides. Thionyl chloride commonly targets oxygen functional groups that POCl₃ activates differently.
Phosphorus pentoxide : A family of phosphorus(V) oxides, commonly represented by the empirical formula P₂O₅. Industrial routes can produce POCl₃ by chlorinating phosphorus oxide feedstocks.
Vilsmeier–Haack reaction : An organic reaction that formylates electron-rich aromatic compounds using a chloroiminium reagent. POCl₃ activates DMF to generate the formylating reagent.
Chlorination : A chemical process that introduces chlorine into a molecule or material. POCl₃ replaces oxygen-containing functionality with chlorine in selected substrates.
Phosphorus–oxygen compounds : Compounds whose structures contain bonds between phosphorus and oxygen atoms. POCl₃ belongs to this broad class of oxygen-containing phosphorus compounds.
Phosphorus pentachloride : A solid chlorine-transfer reagent, PCl₅, used to convert oxygen compounds into chlorides. PCl₅ is a related phosphorus chlorinating reagent but has a different composition and physical form.
White phosphorus : A highly reactive, waxy allotrope of elemental phosphorus that glows faintly in air. Industrial phosphorus chemistry can begin with elemental phosphorus before oxidation and chlorination.
