Photophobia

Photophobia is unusual sensitivity or discomfort in response to light. It is a symptom, not a disease, and can arise from eye disorders, neurological conditions, or medications.

Trigeminal nerve: A cranial nerve that carries facial sensation and controls muscles used for chewing. Trigeminal pathways can carry light-related pain signals from the eye.
Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea, the eye's middle layer, which can cause pain and impaired vision. Inflammation inside the eye is a significant cause of light discomfort.
Phonophobia: Unusual sensitivity or discomfort in response to sound. It is a sound-related sensory symptom often accompanying migraine, unlike light sensitivity.
Photoreceptor cell: A sensory cell that detects light and converts it into electrical signals. Photoreceptors begin the visual signaling process affected by incoming light.
Tinted lens: An optical lens that selectively reduces or filters incoming light. Tinted lenses can reduce discomfort for some people with light sensitivity.
Retinal ganglion cell: A retinal neuron that sends visual signals toward the brain through the optic nerve. A subset of these cells responds to light and can influence discomfort.
Corneal abrasion: A scratch or break in the corneal surface, often causing sharp pain, tearing, and light sensitivity. A damaged cornea can make ordinary light painful, especially with blinking.
Visual snow syndrome: A neurological condition involving persistent flickering or grainy visual disturbances across the visual field. It alters visual perception continuously rather than describing discomfort triggered by light.
Pupil: The adjustable opening in the iris through which light enters the eye. Pupil size changes the amount of light reaching the retina.
FL-41 tint: A rose-colored lens tint used by some people to reduce light sensitivity, especially with migraine. It is a specific tint studied and used for migraine-related photophobia.
