Phyllode

A phyllode is a flattened leaf stalk that performs the functions of a leaf blade. It develops when the true leaf blade is reduced or absent.

Petiole: The stalk that connects a leaf blade to a plant stem. A phyllode is formed from this leaf structure as it flattens and assumes blade functions.
Acacia: A genus of trees and shrubs, many of which bear flattened leaf stalks called phyllodes. Phyllodes are especially familiar in many Acacia species.
Leaf blade: The broad, usually flattened part of a leaf that captures light and exchanges gases. It is the structure whose functions a phyllode performs.
