Phytosociology

Phytosociology is the study of plant communities, including their composition, structure, classification, and relationships with the environment.

Plant community: A group of plant populations living together in a particular place and interacting with one another and their environment. Phytosociology treats these communities as its central units of description.
Vegetation relevé: A standardized field record of plant species and their abundance or cover within a defined sample plot. Relevés provide the basic observations used to describe plant stands.
Josias Braun-Blanquet: A Swiss botanist who developed a widely influential system for classifying plant communities. His approach shaped much of modern European phytosociological practice.
European Nature Information System: A European database and classification framework for habitats and species of conservation interest. Its habitat descriptions draw on vegetation classification relevant to phytosociological surveys.
Individualistic concept of plant communities: The view that species distributions form gradients through largely independent responses to environmental conditions. It contrasts with classifications that treat recurring species groups as discrete community units.

Clementsian succession: A model of succession in which plant communities develop through predictable stages toward a relatively stable climax. Its integrated view of communities differs from more open-ended interpretations of vegetation change.
