Piano transcription

Piano transcription adapts music written for other instruments or ensembles so it can be performed on piano, reshaping texture, register, and technique to fit the instrument.

Musical arrangement: A reshaping of existing music for different performers, instruments, or performance conditions. Piano transcription is a specific kind of arrangement shaped around one instrument.
Franz Liszt: A Hungarian composer and pianist whose works helped define nineteenth-century virtuoso piano music. His transcriptions made orchestral and operatic repertory central to the piano recital.
Piano: A keyboard instrument that produces sound when felt hammers strike strings. Its expanding range and expressive control made it a flexible destination for music written elsewhere.
Piano reduction: A compressed keyboard version of a larger musical score, often used in rehearsal or study. Unlike many transcriptions, reductions prioritize access to ensemble parts over a self-sufficient concert texture.

Fortepiano: An early form of the piano with a lighter action and a more varied tone than the harpsichord. Its development created new possibilities for adapting orchestral music to the keyboard.
Paraphrase (music): A composition that reshapes themes from another work, often with substantial variation. A paraphrase can transform source material more freely than a faithful transcription.
Keyboard fingering: The assignment of fingers to notes and passages in keyboard performance. A transcription’s voicing and passagework depend on feasible hand positions and fingerings.
