Piast dynasty

The Piast dynasty was Poland’s first historical ruling house, whose members governed Polish territories from the 10th century until the death of Casimir III in 1370.

Mieszko I: The first historically documented ruler of the Piast dynasty, who accepted Christianity in 966. His rule established the dynasty’s historical record and brought Poland into Latin Christendom.
Seniorate Province: The territory assigned to Poland’s senior duke under the succession settlement of Bolesław III. Its creation institutionalized the division of Piast authority among competing heirs.
Saint Jadwiga of Silesia: A Silesian duchess and Christian saint who lived from about 1174 to 1243. Her marriage to Henry I the Bearded linked Piast rule to religious patronage in Silesia.

Fragmentation of Poland: The division of Poland into competing Piast-ruled principalities from 1138 until reunification. Regional branches turned one ruling house into numerous rival courts.
