Pictorialism

Pictorialism was an early photographic movement that treated photographs as fine art, emphasizing expressive composition and painterly effects over sharp, literal documentation.

Soft focus: An optical or photographic effect that renders image details gently blurred rather than sharply defined. Pictorialists used softened detail to reject the appearance of mechanical precision.
Oscar Gustave Rejlander: A Swedish-born British photographer known for staged compositions and combination printing. His elaborate 1857 photomontage demonstrated how photography could construct a complex allegory.
Alfred Stieglitz: An American photographer, editor, and gallery owner who shaped modern photography and its institutions. He promoted Pictorialism through Photo-Secession and Camera Work before turning toward straight photography.
Straight photography: A photographic approach that presents the subject with minimal manipulation and emphasizes the medium’s direct descriptive qualities. Its demand for clarity opposed Pictorialist softness and hand-altered surfaces.
