Pied Piper of Hamelin

A legendary piper who rids Hamelin of rats with music and, after the town refuses payment, leads away its children.

Children of Hamelin: The group said to have left Hamelin in 1284 and never returned. Their disappearance is the legend’s earliest recorded core.
Rat-catcher: A person employed to remove rats and other vermin from buildings or settlements. The Piper’s first role draws on a recognizable medieval occupation.
Brothers Grimm: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, German scholars who collected and published folktales. Their retelling helped circulate the Piper story beyond Hamelin.
Broken promise: A commitment that is not fulfilled by the person or group that made it. The town’s refusal to pay gives the Piper’s revenge its stated cause.
Children's Crusade: A name for thirteenth-century movements of young people toward the eastern Mediterranean, described in later chronicles. A proposed link to Hamelin’s missing children remains disputed and chronologically uncertain.
